APRÈS LES GRENOUILLES ... DES CRABES !

Image
Four new species of freshwater crab, bright purple in colour, have been discovered in the biologically diverse but ecologically-threatened Philippines, the man who found them said Saturday. The tiny crustaceans burrow under boulders and roots in streams, feeding on dead plants, fruits, carrion and small animals in the water at night, said Hendrik Freitag of Germany's Senckenberg Museum of Zoology. Found only in sm

ENCORE ... DES GRENOUILLES ?

Image
Two new species of frog have been discovered in fast-disappearing forests in the Philippines, boosting hopes for the survival of the country's rich but threatened wildlife, scientists said Tuesday. The new discoveries are a mottled brown frog with red eyes and a broad yellow stripe running down its back, and a yellow-green one not much bigger than a human thumb, British-based Fauna and Flora International said. Country director Aldrin Mallari said the finds should boost conservation efforts in the Philippines, which has extremely diverse plant and animal life but where many species are threatened by extinction. "Many (environmental) institutions an

LA PRESSION ... MONTE !

Image
China has asked all Philippine vessels to leave immediately Panatag Shoal and sent a second aircraft buzzing over the area to scare away Filipino fishermen, officials said Tuesday. On Monday night, the Chinese Embassy in Manila insisted that Panatag, which it calls Huangyan Island and which is internationally known as Scarborough Shoal, belongs to Beijing. “As of now we still have a standoff because we are told to leave but we won’t leave,

LA CHINE ... MONTRE SES GRIFFES !

Image

Je vais vous en parler sur mon autre blog : < www.expatauxphilippines.blogspot.com > Hundreds of barefoot Filipinos marched on roads, carrying heavy wooden crosses and whipping their backs until they bled on Thursday in an annual gory religious ritual as the mainly Catholic Philippines observed near the end of the Lenten season. Many Filipino devotees perform religious penance during the week leading up to Easter Sunday as a form of worship and supplication, a practice discouraged by Catholic bishops, but widely believed by devotees to cleanse sins, cure illness and even grant wishes. "I do this penance out of my free will because I believe that God will help relieve my sickness," Corazon Cabigting, a domestic helper and the only woman in a group of about 50 men carrying wooden crosses on th

LE CONTOD ROCKET STOVE !

Image
ILOILO CITY — The misery of typhoon victims has encouraged a Filipino development worker to share a stove innovation that can be built in less than two hours with minimal skills and tools and uses twigs and branches which the affected families can collect from debris. Called the Contod Rocket Stove,  the stove can be made out of tin metal sheets such as old metal roof (yero), 30 liters carbide canisters or even biscuit container of equivalent size plus two pieces of one-liter tin cans, (Del Monte pineapple cans are of the right size). It will also require clay and other biomass materials such as rice husks and coco fiber (bunot ng niyog) for the insulating layer. Although very simple and rugged in construction, this stove is very powerful and highly efficient. Compared to a three stone open
